Description

Art curio- ethnic brass bell from India. Metal craft and specifically craft and sculpture made of brass, copper and bronze go back a long, long way in India- all the way to the Indus Valley Civilization.

The discovery of the small bronze statuette of a dancing girl at the ancient site of Mohenjo-Daro in Central India testifies to the antiquity of Indian metal crafts 5000 years ago. Another famous early reference to metal craft is the 80 ft high Buddha statue in copper in a town called Nalanda in early 7th Century by Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang.

From this great lineage of work on metals comes this piece in brass- The celebrated, classic temple bell of South India. Tamilnadu's Kanchipuram is known as the Land of a Thousand Temples and from this temple town you have this decorative all-brass bell to adorn any room in your beautiful home.

This particular piece brass beaten into shape and polished to such a fine lustrous finish like gold and resonance to the ring that is reminiscent of the temple bell of South Inidan temples. Adorning the top of the handle is an exquisite brass sculpture of the "Nandhi" or the bull sculpture that is found in most temples, facing the main shrine. Legend has it that the Nandhi was Lord Shiva's, the most powerful of Hindu gods, "vaahanam" or mount.

Indian brass art serves as interesting pieces of art curios in homes, the world over. And would make a great conversational piece when your visitors ask “Hey..Where did you get that?”

How about welcoming a piece of art that has 5000 years of ancestry to it.

India’s textile, fabric, art and craft traditions go down centuries- the talent of the craftsman and his dedication to his craft, passed on from one generation to another. A weave, a mix of colors, a design or a motif, a print, a piece of applique work- each a labor of love for the artisan, in giving birth to his creation.
