Description

Casual, colourful shoes and sandals in leather from India: Fashion footwear for the contemporary city dweller, from five centuries back.

Mumtaz, the lady for whom the Taj Mahal was built probably lived in shoes and sandals much like these. Originally meant for the Maharajahs and the Maharanis [Kings and Queens and such royalty], these handcrafted fashion footwear for men and women mainly come from the villages of Punjab and Rajasthan. This period fashion piece was introduced to India during the Mughal period in the 16th century and possibly has its design roots from Persia.

Called Juttis or Mojaris, these light, flirty shoes are made from vegetable tanned leather and get their fashionable twists and splashes of color from a variety of stitching with gold, silver and colored threads and embroidery done by women. Embellished with beads, mirror-work, colorful motifs and designs, these are a fashion statement in today’s urban streets.

If you are an ardent shoe lover, a few of these in your closet are a “must have”.

Indian Leather: India is known the world over for its quality leather products and is the second largest producer of leather products in the world. Some of the fashion brands across the world that source their leather products from India are: Armani, Coach, Guess, Harrods, Hush Puppies, Kenneth Cole, Liz Claiborne, Marks & Spencer, Nautica, Next, Nike, Cole Haan, Pierre Cardin, Prada, Reebok, Salamander, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Yves St. Laurent, Zara, Timberland.

VEGETABLE TANNING: As opposed to chemical tanning, this process uses natural extracts from tree bark like chestnut & oak and is labor intensive and time consuming. The process from raw hide to tanned leather takes nearly 60 days. Hence, vegetable tanned leather tends to be more expensive but is totally environment friendly and ages very well.
