India's Madhubani Art Painting. Original Ethnic Painting. Ethnic art. Indian Folk Art- 22"by7.5". Indian decor idea. From Artikrtii
This original painting is a depiction of “Ardhanarishwara”, done in the Madhubani style of Indian paintings. Traditionally, it is mostly the women of Bihar, a province in India and more specifically those in the town of Madhubani who used to paint and each woman passed on the teachings of how to paint, to their daughters. And today it has become a form of livelihood to the women of that region.
Done on homemade, handmade paper, the color inks used are all vegetable based. Madhubani art is the art form from India that is in most demand the world over amongst art connoisseurs.
But what is “Ardhanarishwara”? To truly appreciate this painting, you need to know this.
Today we talk of the feminine side of man or there is a male in every female and so on. Two thousand years back, early inhabitants of India left back sculpture and writings talking of ‘man and woman in one form’. And as they saw it, God in his purest form was man & woman, half and half. It conveys that God is, "both male and female, both father and mother, both aloof and active, both fearsome and gentle, both destructive and constructive". This enlightened view and form was called “Ardhanarishwara”, representing the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies.
“Ardh” means “half’, “Nari” means “woman” and “Ishwara” means “lord”- “The Lord who is half woman”. It is also symbolic of the unification of the male and female energies as the basis for creation. Enlightened thinking dating back to stone sculptures as far back as the years 20-35 AD.

India’s textile & fabric traditions and art forms go down centuries- the talent of the craftsman and his or her dedication to the craft, passed on from one generation to another. A weave, a mix of colors, a design or a motif, a print, a piece of applique work- each a labor of love for the artisan.
