Description
Marble sculpture and inlay work is one exquisitely fine art that ages back to more than five hundred years in India. It is said to have reached Indian shores half a century after its origins in Italy. The Mughal emperors fancied the workmanship and fostered a community of artists in the art of creating sculptures and monuments from marble, the most notable of which is the Taj Mahal.

The flourishing marble carving and sculpture was also helped by the easy availability of some of the world's most finest marble in Agra in northern India.

The process of inlay work and painting on marble adds a complexity to the art- once the sculptor finishes his carving and polishing, he starts chiseling the pattern that he has imagined for the piece. This is a piece of workmanship which does not stand even the slightest of error because the marble will chip in an uneven manner and his whole sculpture will be lost. He then starts his painting- in gold and other bright colours, making the tiny patterns that he has carved into the marble to come alive. Finally, he or she then cuts and sands stones to form the shape that he has carved in the marble and embeds them in the grooves that he has chiselled. The painting and the stone embellishment has a very Minakari [the enamel painted jewelry art of India] kind of feel

From this great lineage of work on marble comes this Ganesha. Vinayaka OR Ganesha OR Ganapati, the elephant trunk sporting God in Indian mythology is believed to be the God of Wisdom and the Remover of Obstacles or the God of Success. Hence he is symbolic of all good things that we want to happen in our lives.

This work of art in marble is a modern rendition of Ganesha or Buddinath as he is also known. Buddhinath means God of Wisdom. Bring home this Ganesha or gift it to a friend for wisdom or for just the touch of contemporary ethnic touch to the decor.

Spread that aura of "enlightenment" & "ethnic chic".
